Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Came Back From the Dead

An illustration for this fictional story

“IF THAT WOMAN IS REALLY MY MOTHER, WHY IS SHE HIDING FROM ME?” Maria Santos stood before the enormous security monitor in Alexander Vance's private study, staring at the photograph that had just shattered everything she believed about her childhood.

Outside, rain battered the windows of the mansion. Lightning flashed across the dark gardens, briefly illuminating the old family chapel beyond the oak trees. Somewhere inside that abandoned building, a woman who looked exactly like Isabella Santos was waiting.

Maria had buried her mother seventeen years earlier.

She remembered the small funeral, the white flowers, and the terrible silence that followed the lowering of the coffin. She remembered holding her younger sister Sofia's hand while a priest spoke words neither child was old enough to understand.

And now someone was telling her that the woman inside that coffin might not have been Isabella at all.

Alexander stood beside her, his expression hard.

“You are not going to that chapel alone.”

Maria turned to face him.

“The message specifically says I have to.”

“That's exactly why you shouldn't.”

“She might be my mother!”

“And someone knows you're desperate enough to believe it.”

Maria flinched.

Alexander immediately regretted his tone, but he refused to withdraw the warning. He had spent years negotiating with ruthless men who used emotional pressure as effectively as financial threats. Whoever sent the message understood Maria's greatest weakness.

Her longing for a mother she had lost.

Marcus entered the study carrying a tablet.

“Mr. Vance, the police have been notified. Detective Rachel Bennett is sending officers to the estate. She advised us not to approach the chapel until they arrive.”

Alexander nodded.

“Good.”

Maria stared at him.

“How long?”

“Twenty minutes.”

She looked at the clock.

11:42 p.m.

Only eighteen minutes remained before midnight.

“If the person who sent that message leaves before the police arrive, we might lose our only chance.”

Alexander glanced toward the chapel.

Then he made a decision.

“We'll go to the garden entrance. We won't enter the building. Marcus will coordinate with the police.”

Maria nodded reluctantly.

But as they turned to face the door, a weak voice interrupted them.

“Maria…”

Evelyn Vance sat in her wheelchair at the study entrance, accompanied by a nurse.

Her face was pale, and speaking still required considerable effort.

Maria rushed toward her.

“Mrs. Vance, you should be resting.”

Evelyn ignored the warning.

She looked straight at the photograph on Marcus's tablet.

Then she began trembling.

“Isabella…”

Alexander knelt beside his mother.

“Do you recognize her?”

Evelyn nodded.

“She's… alive.”

The room went silent.

Maria's breath caught.

“You knew?”

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“I… thought… she was.”

Alexander stared at his mother.

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn struggled to form the words.

“She came… back… once.”

Maria felt the floor shift beneath her.

“When?”

Evelyn looked toward the dark window.

“After… the funeral.”

Maria stepped backward.

“My mother's funeral?”

Evelyn nodded.

Maria pressed both hands against her mouth.

Seventeen years.

Seventeen years of grief, poverty, and unanswered questions.

And Evelyn had known there was a possibility Isabella was alive.

“Why didn't you tell me?” Maria whispered.

Evelyn began crying.

“Couldn't… find… her.”

Alexander gently touched his mother's shoulder.

“Mother, we need the whole truth.”

Evelyn looked at Maria.

“Your mother… saved… Thomas.”

Alexander froze.

“My father?”

Evelyn nodded.

“Both… disappeared.”

Maria stared at the photograph.

The man in black.

The woman beside him.

Two people supposedly dead.

Two people connected to the same secret financial trust.

And both had apparently been hiding for years.

Marcus's radio crackled.

“Security Team Three to command. We have movement near the chapel.”

Alexander immediately turned.

“Report.”

“Two figures approaching the eastern entrance. One male, one female.”

Maria's heart pounded.

“It's them.”

Marcus listened.

Then his expression changed.

“Correction. Three figures.”

Alexander frowned.

“Who's the third?”

The officer answered.

“Unknown male. Dark clothing. Carrying what appears to be a briefcase.”

Suddenly, the radio erupted with shouting.

“STOP! IDENTIFY YOURSELF!”

A sharp crashing sound followed.

Then silence.

Alexander grabbed the radio.

“Team Three, respond!”

Nothing.

Marcus immediately called for backup.

Maria rushed toward the window.

Lightning illuminated the chapel.

A dark vehicle was speeding away from the northern gate.

“Someone's leaving!” she cried.

Alexander moved beside her.

“Marcus, lock down the estate.”

“Already doing it.”

But the vehicle disappeared behind the trees before the gates could close.

Maria stared helplessly into the darkness.

Then her phone vibrated.

A new message.

YOUR MOTHER IS INSIDE. COME NOW, OR YOU WILL NEVER SEE HER AGAIN.

Attached was a photograph.

A woman sat in the chapel beneath a stained-glass window, her wrists apparently restrained to the arms of an old wooden chair.

Maria gasped.

The woman had Isabella's eyes.

Isabella's scar.

And the silver wedding ring Maria remembered from childhood.

Alexander studied the image.

“Marcus, send this to Detective Bennett.”

Maria grabbed his arm.

“We can't wait.”

Alexander looked at her.

“Maria—”

“She's tied to a chair!”

He glanced at the photograph again.

Then toward the chapel.

“Alright. We approach with security, but nobody enters until we know what's inside.”

They hurried through the rear entrance beneath the shelter of a covered stone walkway.

Rain swept across the gardens.

Maria's shoes splashed through shallow puddles as she followed Alexander and Marcus toward the chapel.

The building stood at the edge of the estate, its weathered stone walls covered with ivy. Its stained-glass windows glowed faintly from a light inside.

The main door was open.

Marcus raised his hand.

“Wait.”

He signaled two officers to check the perimeter.

A moment later, one returned.

“No visible movement outside.”

Alexander looked at Maria.

“Stay behind me.”

They entered.

The chapel smelled of old wood, damp stone, and extinguished candles.

Rows of wooden pews stretched toward the altar.

And beneath the enormous stained-glass window sat a woman in a dark coat.

Her head was lowered.

Maria stopped breathing.

“Mom?”

The woman slowly lifted her face.

Maria's knees nearly buckled.

Those eyes.

That scar.

That familiar expression.

“Maria,” the woman whispered.

Maria took a step forward.

“Mom?”

Tears streamed down the woman's cheeks.

“My little girl.”

Maria began running.

But Alexander caught her wrist.

“Wait.”

She turned furiously.

“Let me go!”

Alexander stared at the woman's hands.

The restraints visible in the photograph were gone.

And the woman's expression had changed.

She was no longer crying.

She was looking at the silver pendant around Maria's neck.

“Maria,” Alexander said quietly, “ask her something only your mother would know.”

Maria swallowed.

Then looked at the woman.

“When Sofia was five, she was terrified of thunderstorms. What did you tell her?”

The woman hesitated.

Only for a brief moment.

But Maria noticed.

Then she smiled.

“I told her angels were moving furniture in heaven.”

Maria felt a sudden chill.

That was not what Isabella had said.

Their mother had always told Sofia that thunder was the sound of giants bowling in the clouds.

Maria stepped backward.

“You're not my mother.”

The woman's smile vanished.

Alexander moved in front of Maria.

“Who are you?”

The woman stood up slowly.

Then she reached into her coat.

Marcus immediately ordered her to keep her hands visible.

She stopped.

A bitter smile appeared.

“You really are Thomas Vance's son.”

Alexander stared at her.

“Answer the question.”

The woman looked directly at Maria.

“My name is Elena Santos.”

Maria froze.

“Santos?”

The woman nodded.

“Isabella was my sister.”

Maria stared.

“My mother had a sister?”

Elena's eyes hardened.

“Yes. And she spent seventeen years making sure you never knew I existed.”

Before Maria could speak, Elena pointed toward the altar.

“Your mother didn't die in that accident, Maria.”

Maria's breath caught.

Elena continued.

“She disappeared because she found out who was stealing from the Vance family.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“Where is Isabella now?”

Elena looked toward the chapel's rear door.

Then whispered:

“ASK YOUR FATHER.”

Maria stared at her.

“My father died when I was a baby.”

Elena shook her head.

“No, Maria.”

Her voice became ice-cold.

“THE MAN WHO RAISED YOU WASN'T YOUR BIOLOGICAL FATHER.”
