Chapter 13 - The Father Who Returned After Twenty-Two Years

An illustration for this fictional story

“IF YOU'RE THOMAS VANCE, WHY DID YOU WAIT UNTIL NOW TO COME HOME?” Alexander stood in the rehabilitation center's private consultation room, facing a man he had mourned for twenty-two years.

The stranger was in his late fifties, with silver hair, a weathered face, and a long dark coat damp from the rain.

He was thinner than the man in the family portraits.

Older.

More tired.

But there was something unmistakably familiar about his eyes.

Alexander recognized the same gray gaze he saw every morning in the mirror.

The man looked at him.

“Because coming home would have put you in danger.”

Alexander gave a bitter laugh.

“You've had twenty-two years to come up with something better than that.”

The man's expression tightened.

“I deserve your anger.”

“You deserve a thousand questions.”

“I know.”

Alexander stepped closer.

“Then answer the first one. Are you really my father?”

The man reached into his coat.

Two officers immediately shifted their attention toward him.

He stopped.

“I'm carrying an old photograph.”

Detective Bennett nodded.

“Remove it slowly.”

He produced a small wallet.

Inside was a faded picture of a boy standing beside a white pony.

Alexander stared.

He remembered that day.

His ninth birthday.

The pony had bitten his sleeve, and his father had laughed so hard he nearly dropped the camera.

The man spoke quietly.

“You cried because you thought the pony hated you.”

Alexander's throat tightened.

“I told you it was only frightened.”

The man nodded.

“And I told you frightened creatures sometimes look angry.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

For a brief moment, the room disappeared.

He was nine years old again.

Standing in the sunshine.

Listening to his father's voice.

But memories could be stolen.

Stories could be repeated.

And too many people had already lied to him.

He opened his eyes.

“I want a DNA test.”

The man nodded immediately.

“You should.”

Bennett watched him closely.

“Until your identity is verified, we'll refer to you as Mr. Vance's alleged father. We also need to know why you entered the country without contacting authorities.”

The man looked toward the window.

“Because the people hunting me have friends in places I don't trust.”

Alexander's expression hardened.

“Richard Sterling?”

“Yes.”

“And who else?”

The man hesitated.

“Someone who was once closer to me than Richard.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“Who?”

The man shook his head.

“I need to see Evelyn first.”

Alexander's face changed.

“No.”

“Alexander—”

“You don't get to disappear for twenty-two years and demand access to my mother.”

The man lowered his eyes.

“Fair enough.”

Maria entered quietly.

She had left Sofia resting with a nurse and an officer.

When she saw the stranger, she stopped.

He looked toward her.

“Maria.”

She stared.

“You know me?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“You look so much like Isabella.”

Maria felt anger rise.

“Then tell me where she is.”

The man swallowed.

“I don't know where she is now.”

“Victoria says she's holding her.”

His expression changed sharply.

“Victoria?”

Maria nodded.

“She let me hear my mother's voice.”

The man stepped forward.

“Did you actually see Isabella?”

“No.”

“Then you don't know who was speaking.”

Maria flinched.

Alexander moved beside her.

“Don't play games.”

The man looked desperate.

“I'm not. Richard has used recordings and impersonators before. He knows what people are willing to believe when they're grieving.”

Maria stared at him.

“So my mother might still be dead?”

“I don't know.”

The answer hurt more than Maria expected.

She had spent the past few hours allowing herself to imagine a reunion.

Isabella walking through a doorway.

Isabella embracing Sofia.

Isabella explaining the years of silence.

Now that hope was being pulled away again.

The man noticed her tears.

“I'm sorry.”

Maria wiped her face.

“Then give me something real.”

He nodded.

“Ask me about Grace.”

The room went silent.

Alexander stared at him.

“You know about her?”

The man closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Maria stepped forward.

“Was Grace your daughter?”

A long pause followed.

Then he answered.

“Yes.”

Alexander turned away.

For a brief moment, he couldn't look at the man.

The father he had worshipped had kept another family hidden.

And now Alexander was discovering that the consequences of that secrecy had reached into the life of a woman who had risked everything to protect his mother.

Maria swallowed.

“Did you love Isabella?”

The man looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Did you love Evelyn?”

“Yes.”

Maria's expression hardened.

“You can't expect us to understand that.”

“I don't.”

He lowered his head.

“I hurt people I loved. Nothing I say can undo that.”

Alexander turned back.

“Then why was Grace taken?”

The man looked toward Bennett.

“Richard learned about her. He realized that under the trust provisions I had drafted, Grace could eventually receive a protected share of certain family assets.”

Alexander frowned.

“Why would that threaten him?”

“Because the trust included a review mechanism. If a beneficiary or custodian challenged the accounts, an independent audit could expose the transactions Richard was hiding.”

Maria stared.

“So he took a child to stop an audit?”

“He used the child as leverage. Isabella was told Grace had died. I was told she had been placed somewhere safe.”

Alexander's voice became cold.

“And you believed him?”

“No. But by the time I found evidence of the deception, Grace had disappeared from every official record I could access.”

Bennett stepped closer.

“Do you have documents supporting any of this?”

The man nodded.

“Some. I can identify the original trustee and the school where Grace was placed.”

Maria's heart pounded.

“St. Catherine's Academy?”

The man froze.

“How do you know that?”

“Sofia found Mom's letter.”

The man's expression crumpled.

“Isabella kept it.”

Alexander stared at him.

“What happened at that school?”

The man lowered his eyes.

“Grace attended under another name.”

“What name?”

“Clara Whitmore.”

Bennett immediately wrote it down.

“Do you know where Clara Whitmore is now?”

The man hesitated.

“I know where she was last seen.”

Maria stepped closer.

“Where?”

He looked at Alexander.

“At a Sterling family event six years ago.”

Alexander froze.

“What event?”

The man swallowed.

“Your engagement announcement.”

Alexander stared.

“Victoria was there.”

“Yes.”

“Was Grace Victoria?”

The man shook his head.

“No.”

Maria exhaled shakily.

“Then who was she?”

The man looked toward the doorway.

“She worked for the event organizers. She was trying to get close to Richard Sterling.”

Alexander's expression darkened.

“Why?”

“Because she had discovered part of the truth.”

Bennett leaned forward.

“Do you have a photograph of her as an adult?”

The man nodded.

“There's one in my phone.”

He handed the device to Bennett.

She opened the image.

A woman stood beside a flower arrangement in an elegant hotel ballroom.

She had dark hair tied neatly back.

A modest black dress.

And a small scar near her eyebrow.

Maria stared at the screen.

The face was familiar.

Terrifyingly familiar.

Alexander leaned closer.

Then he said softly:

“Elena?”

Maria looked at her aunt, standing near the doorway.

Elena had gone completely pale.

The man turned.

For the first time, he saw her clearly.

His expression changed from confusion to horror.

“No…”

Elena stepped backward.

The man pointed at her.

“THAT WOMAN ISN'T ELENA SANTOS.”

Maria froze.

Alexander moved in front of her.

The man continued, his voice breaking.

“SHE'S GRACE.”
