Chapter 32 - THE BOY WHO WAS BURIED WITHOUT EVER DYING“FIND MY FATHER.”

An illustration for this fictional story

Alexander stood inside the private elevator as it descended from the executive floor.

Maria, Gabriel, Marcus, and Detective Bennett surrounded him.

Nobody spoke.

The question hanging over them was too large.

If Isabella was telling the truth, somewhere in the world existed another man who had been born Alexander Vance.

Which meant the billionaire standing inside the elevator might have spent twenty-two years living another child’s life.

The doors opened.

They moved quickly through the underground garage.

Bennett’s officers followed in separate vehicles.

Rain had begun falling by the time Alexander’s convoy reached the highway north.

Maria sat beside him.

He had barely spoken since Isabella’s call.

Finally she said softly, “Alexander.”

He stared through the window.

“What do I call myself if she’s right?”

Maria’s chest tightened.

He continued.

“My company bears a name that might not be mine. My mother might not be my mother. My father might not be my father.”

He looked at her.

“My childhood might belong to someone else.”

Maria shook her head.

“Your childhood belongs to you because you lived it.”

“Did I?”

The question frightened her.

Alexander looked toward the highway.

“I remember waking up after my father disappeared.”

Maria remained silent.

“I remember Mother holding me.”

His brow furrowed.

“But everything before that day…”

He closed his eyes.

“It feels different.”

Gabriel leaned forward from the opposite seat.

“What do you mean?”

Alexander hesitated.

“Fragments.”

He remembered a red bicycle.

A wooden dock.

A woman singing beside a window.

A dog named Charlie.

But Evelyn had always told him they never owned a dog.

He had assumed childhood memories blurred with dreams.

Now he was no longer certain.

Marcus looked at him.

“Do you remember me?”

Alexander turned.

Marcus’s voice softened.

“From before Thomas disappeared?”

Alexander searched his memory.

Nothing.

Marcus looked away.

“If I was Daniel Hale, I probably wasn’t around you anyway.”

Gabriel whispered, “Edward trained us using memory.”

Everyone looked at him.

“He taught me stories about Alexander’s childhood until they felt almost real.”

Bennett frowned.

“You mean conditioning?”

Gabriel nodded.

“Pictures. Recordings. Repetition.”

Alexander felt sick.

“Could that have been done to me?”

Gabriel looked down.

“Yes.”

The Blackwater complex appeared through the rain thirty minutes later.

Fire engines surrounded the abandoned hospital.

Smoke poured from the eastern wing.

Thomas’s vehicle sat near the entrance.

Empty.

Alexander jumped from the SUV before it fully stopped.

Bennett grabbed his arm.

“You are not entering a burning building.”

“My father is inside.”

“Fire crews are searching.”

Alexander looked toward the shattered windows.

Then someone stumbled through the smoke.

Thomas.

His jacket was burned.

Blood covered his forehead.

“Dad!”

Alexander ran toward him.

Thomas collapsed.

Paramedics rushed forward.

Alexander knelt beside him.

“What happened?”

Thomas grabbed his sleeve.

“He knew.”

“Who?”

“Edward.”

Thomas coughed violently.

“He knew the archive was here.”

Bennett approached.

“What archive?”

Thomas struggled to breathe.

“The original patient records.”

Alexander’s jaw tightened.

“Mine?”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Alexander stared at him.

“Who am I?”

Thomas began crying.

“Son…”

“DON’T CALL ME THAT UNTIL YOU ANSWER ME.”

Thomas flinched.

Maria watched Alexander’s rage collapse into pain.

“Please,” he said softly. “Just once. Tell me the truth before someone else does.”

Thomas looked at him.

Twenty-two years of guilt filled his eyes.

“You were brought to me the night my son disappeared.”

Alexander stopped breathing.

Thomas continued.

“I was running from Richard and Edward. Everything had fallen apart. The original Alexander had vanished.”

“Vanished how?”

“Someone took him.”

“Who?”

“I didn’t know.”

Alexander’s hands trembled.

Thomas continued.

“Hours later, Isabella found another boy.”

Maria stared.

“My mother?”

Thomas nodded.

“He was unconscious near one of our safe houses. About the same age. Similar height. Similar coloring.”

Alexander whispered, “Me.”

“Yes.”

“Did I know my name?”

Thomas shook his head.

“You had a head injury.”

Alexander stepped backward.

“And you decided to make me your son?”

“No!”

Thomas tried to rise.

Paramedics stopped him.

“I took you to Blackwater because I wanted to identify you. But Edward found out.”

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“What did he do?”

“He created the replacement plan.”

Alexander stared.

“And Mother?”

Thomas looked away.

“Evelyn believed you were Alexander.”

Silence.

Alexander’s voice dropped.

“You never told her?”

“I couldn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because Edward said the real Alexander would die if I exposed the substitution.”

Alexander laughed bitterly.

“So you sacrificed one boy to save another.”

Thomas began crying.

“I thought my son was still alive.”

“And me?”

Thomas looked at him.

“I loved you.”

Alexander’s expression shattered.

“That wasn’t my question.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

Alexander stepped away.

Maria followed him.

He stood beneath the rain, breathing hard.

She did not tell him everything would be fine.

Nothing was fine.

She simply stood beside him.

After several minutes, Bennett approached.

“Firefighters found a protected basement archive.”

Alexander turned.

“Anything survive?”

“Some records.”

“And Thomas’s original son?”

Bennett hesitated.

“There’s a patient transfer ledger.”

Alexander’s heart pounded.

They entered a mobile command vehicle.

A firefighter placed a smoke-stained ledger inside an evidence bag.

Bennett examined the page.

One entry had been circled decades earlier.

ALEXANDER VANCE — MALE — AGE 13.

TRANSFER AUTHORIZED.

DESTINATION: ST. MATTHEW’S RESIDENTIAL INSTITUTE.

Marcus opened his laptop.

“That facility closed fourteen years ago.”

“Records?”

“Digitized.”

He searched.

Several seconds passed.

Then his face changed.

“What?”

Marcus turned the screen.

A patient profile appeared.

The photograph showed a teenage boy.

Gray eyes.

Dark hair.

A scar above his eyebrow.

Alexander stared.

The resemblance to Thomas was unmistakable.

The patient’s name had been changed.

MICHAEL WARD.

Gabriel whispered, “That’s him.”

Marcus continued searching.

“Michael Ward was discharged at eighteen.”

Alexander leaned closer.

“Where did he go?”

Marcus scrolled.

Then stopped.

“He joined the military.”

Bennett stared.

“Service records?”

“Some are sealed.”

Alexander’s voice hardened.

“Is he alive?”

Marcus searched public records.

A current photograph appeared.

A man in his mid-thirties stood outside a veterans’ support center in Virginia.

He had Thomas’s jaw.

Evelyn’s eyes.

And the same scar.

Status:

ALIVE.

Alexander sat down slowly.

Maria covered her mouth.

For twenty-two years, the real Alexander Vance had lived under another name.

Then Marcus noticed the employment history.

His face changed.

“Alexander…”

The billionaire looked up.

Marcus turned the laptop.

Michael Ward’s most recent employer appeared.

VANCE GLOBAL.

Alexander froze.

“What?”

Marcus swallowed.

“He worked for the company.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

Alexander stared.

“What department?”

Marcus clicked.

Corporate security.

Alexander turned slowly toward Marcus.

“You hired him?”

Marcus looked horrified.

“No.”

“Who did?”

Marcus opened the authorization file.

One signature appeared.

EVELYN VANCE.

Alexander stopped breathing.

His mother had personally authorized Michael Ward’s employment.

And she had never told anyone who he really was.
