Chapter 16 - The Baby Who Carried the Billionaire's Name

An illustration for this fictional story

“WHO WAS THAT BABY, DAD? AND WHY WAS MY NAME ON HIS WRIST?”

Alexander Vance's voice cut through the silence inside the police staging room.

Thomas Vance stood motionless beside the window, his face drained of color. For twenty-two years, Alexander had believed his father was dead. Now the man had returned, only to reveal that his disappearance was connected to a child nobody in the family had ever mentioned.

Maria Santos stared at the photograph on Detective Rachel Bennett's phone.

Her mother, Isabella, was holding a newborn baby.

The photograph had been taken seventeen years earlier, during the same week Maria and Sofia had attended Isabella's funeral.

The baby's hospital bracelet carried the name Alexander Vance.

But Alexander had been thirteen years old at the time.

Someone had deliberately given that child his identity.

And Thomas knew why.

“Answer me,” Alexander demanded.

Thomas slowly sat down.

“The child wasn't you.”

Alexander laughed bitterly.

“I figured that out.”

“He was registered under your name because Richard Sterling wanted him hidden.”

Maria felt her stomach tighten.

“Hidden from whom?”

Thomas looked at her.

“From the people who controlled the blue trust.”

Alexander stepped closer.

“Why would a baby matter to a financial trust?”

Thomas rubbed his forehead.

“Because the trust contained more than money. It contained evidence, ownership records, and a provision protecting children whose identities had been concealed during the investigation.”

Detective Bennett narrowed her eyes.

“Are you saying the child was a beneficiary?”

“Potentially. But his identity was deliberately falsified.”

“Then who were his parents?”

Thomas stared at the floor.

For a few moments, he seemed unable to speak.

Finally, he said softly, “Isabella was his mother.”

Maria felt her knees weaken.

“My mother had another baby?”

Thomas nodded.

Maria stepped backward.

“No. She was supposed to be dead.”

“She wasn't dead.”

The words struck Maria with almost physical force.

She remembered the funeral.

The tiny apartment.

The years of struggling to keep Sofia safe.

The nights she cried herself to sleep because she missed Isabella's voice.

And now she was being told her mother had been alive when another child was born.

“Why didn't she come home?” Maria whispered.

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Because Richard threatened the children she already had.”

Maria's expression changed.

“Me and Sofia?”

“Yes.”

Alexander stared at his father.

“You're telling me Isabella had another child while she was being hunted, and Richard used my identity to conceal him?”

Thomas nodded.

“That's the beginning of it.”

Detective Bennett opened her notebook.

“Then explain the rest.”

Thomas looked toward the photograph.

“Isabella was helping me preserve evidence against Richard's financial network. When our operation was compromised, she disappeared. Her reported death was part of an emergency plan.”

Maria's eyes filled with tears.

“Did she agree to leave us?”

Thomas hesitated.

“She believed she would return within weeks.”

“Seventeen years,” Maria whispered. “She never returned for seventeen years.”

Thomas had no answer.

Alexander's jaw tightened.

“Where was the baby taken?”

Thomas looked toward the dark windows of Ravenwood Recovery Center.

“To a protected residence.”

“Which one?”

Thomas shook his head.

“I was never given the address.”

Detective Bennett leaned forward.

“Who arranged the placement?”

“Richard Sterling.”

Alexander slammed his palm against the table.

“OF COURSE HE DID!”

Maria flinched.

Alexander immediately lowered his voice.

“I'm sorry.”

She shook her head.

“No. You're right to be angry.”

Grace, who had been listening silently, finally spoke.

“Was the baby a boy?”

Thomas nodded.

Grace covered her mouth.

Maria turned to face her.

“What is it?”

Grace's eyes filled with tears.

“When I was at Ravenwood six years ago, I heard nurses talking about a young man.”

Alexander frowned.

“What young man?”

“They called him the second Alexander.”

Silence fell over the room.

Thomas looked up sharply.

“What?”

Grace swallowed.

“I thought they were talking about you.”

Alexander stared at her.

“Did you ever see him?”

Grace nodded slowly.

“Once.”

Maria stepped closer.

“What did he look like?”

Grace's voice trembled.

“He had dark hair. Gray eyes. And a small scar near his chin.”

Thomas went perfectly still.

Alexander noticed.

“Dad?”

Thomas whispered, “That scar…”

“What about it?”

Thomas stared at Grace.

“Did he have a silver medical bracelet?”

Grace nodded.

“Yes.”

Thomas gripped the edge of the table.

“Then he was still alive six years ago.”

Maria's heart pounded.

“Who?”

Thomas looked at her.

“Your brother.”

Maria covered her mouth.

Somewhere in the world, she had another sibling.

A brother who might have spent his entire life living under a stolen identity.

Alexander turned to face Detective Bennett.

“We need every record connected to that child.”

Bennett nodded.

“We're already examining the archive. But we need to establish whether the photograph and bracelet are authentic.”

Marcus entered the room.

“Mr. Vance, we've found something in the hospital's financial records.”

Alexander turned.

“What?”

“A series of private payments for a patient registered as Alexander Vance.”

Thomas stood immediately.

“Where were the payments sent?”

Marcus looked at the tablet.

“To a private educational foundation in Connecticut.”

Grace gasped.

“St. Catherine's?”

Marcus shook his head.

“No. Another institution.”

He turned the tablet around.

The name appeared on the screen.

HOLLOWBROOK RESIDENTIAL ACADEMY.

Detective Bennett frowned.

“That's not a hospital.”

Marcus nodded.

“It's a private boarding institution that closed three years ago.”

Alexander stared at the payment history.

“Who authorized the transfers?”

Marcus hesitated.

“That's the problem.”

“What problem?”

“The authorization wasn't signed by Richard Sterling.”

Thomas's expression changed.

Marcus continued.

“Every payment was approved by someone using the Vance family's private financial credentials.”

Alexander stared.

“WHO?”

Marcus looked directly at him.

“EVELYN VANCE.”
